A large-scale search and recovery operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two missing sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Operations Deployed

Mexico has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine sailors, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation endures repeated national electricity failures.

"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with proper safety systems and communication devices," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Earlier Aid Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Larger Political Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over 50k operations called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up lately, with remarks from various leaders underscoring the complex nature of diplomatic ties.

Reacting to previous statements, a prominent government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their present status remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and guarantee the security of the crews.

At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
