While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
