Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
