An Emotional Event as Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician who understands football back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this news does not affect me."

These were the words of Paul Canoville, the man who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in April 1982.

This week, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, to be their next manager after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls Chelsea.

There have been just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals in interim roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions equality… it is impactful and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's first black head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of representation at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers are from black heritage.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on data provided by eleven clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of his appointment as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of talent present within ethnic minority communities... they desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four permanent British managers currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other big five divisions regarding homegrown representation.

16 out of twenty top-flight coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 are German and 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English coaches from an academy background will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating to up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell at then-League One side Brentford in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services in combating inequality in football and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He started writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He also made a point he would repeat: how significant under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "emotional", but said he could relate to the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "ashamed" upon hearing a coach utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering African heritage boss in Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
