Diane Ladd, Known For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at Age 89.

The award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us 89 years old.

The star, with roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was announced in a statement by her child, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who starred with her mother in a number of films such as Rambling Rose, called her “my amazing hero plus my special gift being my mom”, writing that she was by her side during her final moments.

“She was an exceptional daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist along with empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she expressed. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Rise to Fame

Ladd’s early career featured minor parts in TV shows like Gunsmoke while the seventies featured her performing next to actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she was seen in the thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus comedy sequel Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a sitcom inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the subsequent decade, she earned another best supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her biological child the character played by Dern. A year later she was awarded an additional nod for her role in Rambling Rose which included Dern.

“This movie that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew Laura and I to the UK for a special screening and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, taking our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”

The 1990s featured performances in humorous films Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Dern’s mother another time. The decade also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She continued to star with her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire and White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.

Her later TV roles featured Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and directed the comedy film Mrs Munck that included herself and previous spouse actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she noted. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a movie. In fact, I’m the only woman in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I say ladies, should you desire retribution, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

She was additionally a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact on my life”.

In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and told her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely once her daughter moved her to a new hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering like an injury, instead use it to investigate, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd said.
