The German coach, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club is something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign that included continental glory and the Reds’ first league title for three decades, currently occupies positions overseeing worldwide football for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
They secured the league title in the previous campaign, though countless followers who adore the manager would be thrilled by the idea of his potential comeback. During an extensive chat, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I stated I refuse to lead another team within the country. Therefore in case it's my former club...absolutely. In theory, it could happen.”
“At 58 years old, so the choice could be mine later on, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I can just see how things unfold.”
Pressed on which situations would need to occur to bring him back to the touchline, he revealed he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, My present work fulfills me,” he commented. “No longing for management; I don’t miss standing under bad weather through long matches; No need for press conferences multiple times weekly or constant media duties weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, yet sharing a meal with the players talking freely, is pleasant. We won a lot of games so there was often positive atmosphere at the club. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled as an instance.”
He commended of the current boss, crediting him for the adjustments that won the league last campaign. The team has suffered four in a row in every contest post heavy investment, but he rubbished the idea that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker like Florian Wirtz, critics will regret if you use the wrong words. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good thoughtfully assembled roster. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
He shared movingly on the loss of the Portuguese star, whom he brought in while in charge, and the effect at the club. Jota lost his life in a vehicle collision together with his sibling in July.
“Who can fill the void of a person like him? This isn't just regarding the player himself, his personality mattered. I struggle to conceive the dressing room absent his presence. Putting it into words is tough about it. It was an incredible shock for the entire squad also. No one within the club would cite it for poor performances though it's a fact. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Dealing with that on a personal level is not easy. Overwhelming.”
