The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
