Liz Truss, Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson? A Look Inside the Ex- PM's Foray for Maga

Liz Truss, kicked off the premiere of her YouTube show with a pledge to reveal "the evil-doers" working to weaken Britain, the US and Europe. Truss elaborated she would reveal how an "international network of progressives operate to weaken the democratic process and the electorate's mandate."

"We will examine the political movement of Donald Trump and observe how this can be accomplished in Britain," she said. "Our guests will include the key figures of the Trumpist political sphere."

Prior to the series premiere, there was one particularly enthusiastic supporter. "This marks the start of a sort of revolution," stated veteran reporter John Solomon. His media outlet Just the News will publish the Truss's new podcasts.

Establishing Ties in the Maga-Verse

Compatriot supporters, such as a pro-Reform adviser, have also helped her establish the Truss's program. Its staging is professional, if basic. She has gathered 10,000 subscribers in her debut week and her first episode achieved tens of thousands of views in that timeframe.

This marks a modest start, but in aligning with John Solomon, she is being pushed into a well-developed right-wing media network producing and amplifying pro-Trump narratives. Central preoccupations include claims of media suppression by the traditional news outlets and a goal to eradicate a shadowy government apparatus – which Truss blames for the rapid conclusion of her calamitous premiership.

"The platform is not famous beyond the pro-Trump media sphere, but it does have influence there, mostly due to Solomon, who offers opinions on Maga platforms like Steve Bannon's War Room and has even interviewed Trump," commented Alex Hinton, who has closely studied the Make America Great Again phenomenon.

A Controversial Partner

The former PM's foray to bring American conservative media to the United Kingdom has pushed her closer to controversial figures such as Solomon.

He set up the platform following backlash following accusations of pushing false stories about Biden's anti-corruption work in Ukraine, as well as contentious articles about one-time diplomat to that country.

Solomon's reporting were repeated throughout the pro-Trump outlets, with the journalist appearing as a frequent visitor on Sean Hannity's influential cable news broadcast. Donald Trump endorsed his stories.

The journalist published the reports about Ukraine in a number of opinion pieces for the outlet the political newspaper, where he was re-designated as an opinion writer when staffers raised concerns over his articles. His claims were key in Trump's pressure for the Ukrainians to investigate the Biden family in 2019. This pressure culminated in impeachment charges against Trump. The Senate later voted to acquit the president.

Weeks after Solomon left the newspaper in late 2019, the outlet revealed it was carrying out a review of his work relating to Ukrainian matters. It found the journalist had used questionable informants and noted he "did not disclose important details about main Ukrainian informants, including the reality that they had been formally accused or were being probed."

Entering the Ecosystem

His TV and radio guest spots are a sign of the conservative ecosystem Truss is joining. He discussed his endorsement of Truss's project on a program he presents on the conservative cable network, a political media platform that is home to the conservative firebrand former adviser Steve Bannon and on which Tucker Carlson also features. Truss has already spoken with Steve Bannon on one of her first podcasts.

By partnering with this media figure, Truss has become a minor player in a much wider network of pro-Trump platforms that frequently amplify each other's content.

Solomon's own programs have repeatedly hosted figures such as influencer Mike Benz, a conservative commentator whose arguments against the foreign aid agency was used by the tech billionaire as reasoning behind dismantling the government body.

An International Strategy

Even though the former PM's unnatural presentation and professional woes have drawn derision within the UK, certain American analysts are taking seriously her efforts to revamp her image as a British branch of the pro-Trump media ecosystem.

"You have to take folks like that as significant, although you may not want to take them literally," said a Democratic strategist, who served in the Biden administration.

"Observers witnessed how in the last election cycle President Trump leveraged that alternative press to spread his narrative. Certainly that network spreads and shapes conversation internationally. It appears relatively clear to me that the circumstances in the UK are akin to what permitted this alternative media ecosystem to prosper in the US."

Alan Finlayson, said the online conservative ecosystem was already having an impact in the UK.

"Digital media is borderless," Finlayson remarked. "There's a kind environment within which stuff flows – sometimes taking an extreme form and sometimes less so – but which is connected."

Professor Hinton said the growth of the internet-based right wing in the United Kingdom in recent times meant the "possibility to have a larger effect is considerable."

Cross-Atlantic Aspirations
