Just as the recent storm hit the northern region the night before, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil triumph for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked successive league setbacks for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' ability to manage league and continental soccer with a thin squad has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the opposition, they looked fatigued all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in contrast, have no such workload worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The trouble started to build for Skinner and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose dynamic offense manipulated and tore United open with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in under half an hour.

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to produce a one shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any team who finished above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to put them in a strong standing after nine games.
