Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
