New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
