Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He contested the law and justice triumphed.

Two months subsequent to getting a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems headed to prison.

Imminent Jailing

The adjudicated plotter – who had been living under home confinement in his residence while a number of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security prison.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the right-wing ex- paratrooper displayed little compassion for the country's prison population.

“Why should we offer those dirtbags a easy time?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Location Discussion

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, several of whom this week visited the facility in an obvious effort to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, claimed he expected the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive problems – the consequence of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 presidential political campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “That’s virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the awful food,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's expected incarceration.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest political injustice in its past”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Varied Popular Reaction

That may be correct given the substantial backing Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. However his expected jailing has also warmed the spirits of millions other people who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to block his successor from becoming president – and even scheming to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current president's Workers’ party, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to get proper treatment – but dignified treatment while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the harsh treatment of prisoners, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that basic rights were not for offenders – decided to inspect a prison to discover what situations are actually like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning handling”.

Likely Prison Environment

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable assigned facility appears to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the impressive official residence, around 20 kilometers away.

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a set and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Ideological Comments

He criticized the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
