Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image appear in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans swiftly called for greater transparency.
“The public are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained little new data.
