Space Traveler Shares Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
