NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
