As part of a notable escalation, Ukrainian forces reportedly used British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil refinery. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military authorities.
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the location. This represents another instance where Ukraine has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets inside Russian territory.
Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the main suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive talks with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on possible ways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a really good conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to move toward real peace closer, and it concerns formats, meetings, and, certainly, the timeline.”
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as politically motivated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in defiance.
The Kremlin has stated it is in contact with French authorities regarding the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.
A spokesperson said that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is closely following the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and push for his liberation as soon as possible.
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its basement, is set to reopen. Authorities in control have promoted the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process that includes the detention or expulsion of critics and property seizures from local residents.
It is expected to open by the month's end with a performance of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
